Hello, my name is Madeline

Welcome to The Madeline Shop! A celebration of craftsmanship and individualism. Here you will find only one-of-a-kind pieces: handmade and hand-picked items selected for their uniqueness.

In a world increasingly diluted by mass production, I present to you a selection of objects made with diligent care - not by a machine but by a real person.

When I am making on the pottery wheel I am totally present. I can't think about anything else - I can barely have a conversation. The world dissipates around me when my hands are engrossed in the sensory experience of the clay. I am inspired by the sun, the sea, the textures of the salt on the rocks, good, real, food: full of colour, vitality and flavour. I want my creations to bring beauty into your home and connections over the table. I hate vaping, I hate processed food, I hate dull mass produced objects with no life to them. I love poached eggs on toast with raspberries. I love the sun on my face and crisp wind. When I make my ceramic tableware I am dreaming of the life I want to live through the pieces that I make. Large platters for fish or fruit - shared with lovers, family and friends.

Heaven is a place you cultivate. I hope you surround yourself with beautiful, meaningful objects in your home. Give life to dull corners and find beauty in the every day. I hope in my store you forage a real treasure. I hope one day, in the not so distant future, you will come to my pottery studio and create your own!

I am currently in the process of setting up my own pottery studio where I look forward to teaching classes to children and adults. ClayClubLondon is about stepping away from technology and stepping back into the present moment. There is a plethora of scientific evidence to support that working with your hands, much like our ancestors, has the potential to have a positive impact on a person's well being. Whilst technology makes ease of our hardships, it is important to honour our innate humanism: especially our natural capacity for creativity and connection. Clay is the vehicle that carries this ethos - it is a material rooted in the fabric of our society. It spans over centuries and across cultures. It is a material easy enough for children but difficult enough to pursue into mastery. I believe this natural earthly material has expansive potential to be implemented in our modern society as a tool to maintain our collective well being. I hope it becomes a place where people can connect and make friends. I hope it is a place where children experience the frustration of throwing on the pottery wheel and learn to persevere. I hope a person makes a mug that they forever love for their tea.

I graduated from Central St. Martins with a Bachelor's degree in Ceramic Design in 2019. My sculptures are created using extruded clay coils, with no wires or internal supports. Given the constraints of the material they are both conceptual pieces of art and an architectural triumph in ceramic. You could describe my work as “drawing in clay” since my forms are reminiscent of drawings or doodles transformed into three-dimensional structures. My breakout collection, "Stations," is a series of ceramic sculptures that allude to the religious imagery of The 14 Stations of The Cross. I have exhibited as part of the Collect 2020 exhibition at Somerset house, been featured in Elle Decor, Milleleu, Living etc magazine and have had an article written about my work in Dezeen. Due to the nature of these structurally ambitious forms, they are unable to be created in a shared ceramic studio space and require very specific making conditions. I am looking forward to experimenting with this method of making when my pottery studio is up and running.

Stay tuned for more,
